Hi, this is FOS Senior Writer Owen Poindexter. Before most Americans had the ability to fire off a wager at will from their phones, the U.S. had seen its share of sports betting scandals. They have remained few and far between, but those days may be over, thanks to several converging factors.
Leagues hand down some of their harshest penalties for gambling infractions, not because they morally oppose the practice (they all have gambling partners now), but because any threat to their integrity is an existential one for a sports league. The drama that sports live off is dependent on our belief that what we see on the court or field is real.
Let me know what you think, @owenpoindexter.
