MSG Invites Fans to Buy Knicks and Rangers Games Directly

  • New MSG+ will offer consumers several pricing options.
  • Fans can stream individual games for $9.99.
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Madison Square Garden Entertainment is creating a standalone platform that will allow fans to buy and stream games for five NHL and NBA teams.

The new MSG+ will enable fans to purchase games for the NBA’s New York Knicks as well as NHL’s New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres.

Streamers can choose a variety of direct-to-consumer options. Among them:

  • Fans can stream an individual game for $9.99 each.
  • Or buy a monthly package of games for $29.99.
  • Or go for an annual subscription that will cost $309.99.

The new streaming service will be limited, however, to cable operators that carry the Madison Square Garden Network.

The new streaming service is aimed at cord-cutters who don’t subscribe to traditional pay TV.

“MSG Networks is delighted to be able to offer fans more ways to watch our compelling and award-winning content,” said Andrea Greenberg, president and chief executive officer of MSG Network, in a statement.

The news was expected.

Greenberg told analysts last year that MSG Networks was planning to launch its own app aimed at cord-cutters, according to the New York Post.

Before Wednesday’s announcement, the network was only available to stream on FuboTV and DirecTV platforms.

The phenomenon of cord-cutting has shrunk the traditional cable TV model to distribution levels not seen since the early 1990s.

Total pay-TV distribution declined by 6.3% in the third quarter of 2022, according to MoffettNathanson’s Cord-Cutting Monitor.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
