MLB Field of Dreams Game Survives the Rain, Delivers on Nostalgia

The third iteration of MLB’s Field of Dreams game contained many now-familiar elements but also took advantage of an upgraded setting in Iowa.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — MLB managed to fight off plenty of rain and the potential of diminishing returns, and pulled off a third iteration of its Field of Dreams game on Thursday.

The Phillies beat the Twins, 7-1, before a lively crowd of 7,163 at the filming site of the 1989 Field of Dreams movie. That outcome, fueled in part by two Kyle Schwarber homers, gave Philadelphia a boost in the postseason chase as the special-event game carried heightened October implications compared to the last Field of Dreams game in 2022, which involved Reds and Cubs teams well out of contention.

More importantly for MLB, though, the league was simply able to stage the event after eastern Iowa was deluged with rain for much of the week and particularly Thursday morning. Despite that, the league and site owner Dyersville Events Inc. were able to take advantage of improved infrastructure and keep the field at major-league specifications.

The improved forecast also allowed the league to avoid a repeat of the MLB Speedway Classic, last year’s special-event game at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, which was postponed overnight due to rain

“This field drained and held up exceptionally well,” MLB field consultant Murray Cook told Front Office Sports shortly before the Field of Dreams game. “We were probably more concerned the other day when there were wind gusts of 90 miles per hour locally and tornado warnings. But we persevered, we’re ready, and the corn is ready.”

Dyersville Events recently opened a new stadium at the Field of Dreams site with crucial permanent features, such as player locker rooms and redesigned seating, that advance significantly beyond the many temporary elements used for the MLB games there in 2021 and 2022.

Leaning Big Into Nostalgia

Much like the first two MLB games here, the extended pregame ceremony veered heavily into nostalgia and history, family themes inherent to the Kevin Costner-led movie, and the unique visuals of the farm setting—as had been expected since the event was first announced a year ago

Twenty-six Baseball Hall of Famers took the field during the elaborate proceedings, emerging from the cornstalks beyond the outfield fence. They represented the largest collection of icons at an MLB game since the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.

“I felt like I was in the movie, I really felt like I was Joe Jackson,” said Phillies legend Mike Schmidt after the ceremony. “It was tremendously special the way they introduced everybody and talked about their careers and statistics and such.

“I’m very appreciative of the essence of what this is all about. … The last couple of weeks, it’s all anybody’s talked about in my travels. But I didn’t realize the expanse of all this until I got here,” Schmidt said.

Streaming Matters

With the Field of Dreams game, Netflix finished its first season as an MLB media rights holder; it also produced the 2026 season opener in March and last month’s Home Run Derby.

Once again, Netflix’s on-air MLB coverage was led by play-by-play announcer Matt Vasgersian, analysts CC Sabathia (also part of the Hall of Famer ceremony) and Hunter Pence, and field reporter Lauren Shehadi, along with on-site studio talent and former baseball stars Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, and Anthony Rizzo, as well as Elle Duncan.

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens made a guest appearance in the booth, and his son Kody was the Twins’ second baseman in the game.

Compared to the glitchy season start in San Francisco, this production was much more polished and had some noticeable tweaks, including an enlarged scorebug after prior fan complaints.

Much like any streaming exclusive in sports broadcasting, though, the Field of Dreams game also drew more vitriol about the non-linear distribution.

“I would love to see the Field of Dreams festivities and game. Much like I would have liked to see the Home Run Derby,” read one typical fan complaint on social media. “I refuse to be held hostage by [MLB’s] unholy alliance with Netflix to fleece ordinary fans though.”

Demand Factors

The stormy weather early Thursday did push the resale market downward for the game. By the afternoon, get-in prices on multiple secondary markets had fallen to around $360 per ticket, slightly more than half the level from early Wednesday

It’s uncertain when, or even if, MLB will come back to Iowa for a fourth Field of Dreams game. The current labor deal allows a limited number of special-event contests each season, subject to certain travel and playing condition requirements, but that agreement expires Dec. 1, and the labor talks toward a new pact remain fractious

Twins and Phillies players and coaches, however, would like to see a return to Iowa happen—and in a more substantive way.

“I definitely would like to have this be for three days instead of one day,” said Phillies star Bryce Harper. “I wish it was three days instead of coming in here so quick. It’d be nice to be able to settle down, get the family out there.”

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
