The Prosper Independent School District in Texas seeks to spend $94 million to build a new high school football stadium, a record amount for the state.

If Prosper ISD’s proposal gets approved, it would be the most expensive school stadium ever built in Texas by $14 million, according to The Dallas Morning News. The Texas school district is seeking $102.4 million in total bond funding for the football project, with $94 million going towards the new stadium and the remaining funds used for renovations to the district’s athletic facilities.

The proposed football stadium would seat 8,000 spectators. Prosper ISD’s existing stadium reportedly seats 12,000 and costs $53 million—meaning construction of its proposed new stadium would be nearly double the price.

Prosper is a town within the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. According to the district, nearly 21,000 new homes have been built in Prosper ISD’s territory since 2016.

The school district will propose its football stadium project to voters on Nov. 7.

High school football is a revered cultural tradition in Texas, with a fictional West Texas high school football team being the center of the “Friday Night Lights” TV series aired on NBC from 2006-2008. Next spring will see the launch of Prep Super League, a football league for elite high school players founded by ex-USFL president Brian Woods that will assist athletes with NIL deals.
